Job Description

A Distribution Designer at Atwell is responsible for designing overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities, collaborating with utilities and developers, and addressing engineering challenges across various projects to ensure efficient power distribution systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design overhead and underground distribution electrical facilities, including system improvements, pole locations, substation, and service design.
  • Perform engineering work on projects such as pole replacement, transformer replacements, infrastructure projects, and line expansions.
  • Address engineering challenges across diverse projects, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Collaborate with electric utilities and private developers on project execution.
  • Verify as-built conditions in GIS and correct discrepancies based on field data.

Requirements

  • Experience working on distribution, transmission, system improvement projects, substation design, service design, and switch replacements.
  • Proficiency in one of the following engineering software applications: MicroStation, AutoCAD, and GIS.
  • Knowledge of NESC (National Electric Safety Code), ArcFm GIS, SAP, and Work Manager Software for overhead and underground distribution.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience in electric distribution or related fields is preferred.
  • Familiarity with engineering design software such as PLS CADD, PLS POLE, SPIDACalc, Quick Pole, CDEGS, CYMECAP, CYMEDIST, CYMETCC, SAG10 as specified by the purchaser.
  • Ability to apply problem-solving abilities for large utility clients and utilize engineering software packages for distribution design.
  • Strong math and engineering skills, including structural analysis, sag analysis, basic algebra, and geometry.
  • Understanding and adherence to the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and client requirements.
  • Experience working on overhead and underground distribution electrical facilities, including pole replacement, PCB transformer replacements, large infrastructure projects, line expansions, distribution generation, line refurbishment, and new construction with wood and composite poles.
  • Experience with distribution system upgrades including system improvement pole locations, substation design, and service design.
  • Experience collaborating with electric utilities and private developers.
  • Ability to verify as-built conditions in GIS AUD and correct discrepancies with field data as part of engineering submissions.
  • Physical ability to work on projects involving overhead and underground distribution facilities, including tasks such as splicing, installing padmounts, secondary enclosures, and switch gears.
  • Knowledge of designing overhead to underground transitions and new customer connections, including residential, commercial, subdivision, and street lighting projects.
  • Understanding of engineering challenges across projects of varying sizes and scopes.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with project teams and report workload status.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and client requirements related to electrical distribution projects.
