As a Distribution Designer at Atwell, you will play a crucial role in supporting project teams through design work on both overhead and underground distribution electrical facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Residential Distribution Design Overhead and Underground lines: Pole replacement, transformer replacements, residential single phase infrastructure projects and line expansions. Overhead and Underground single phase service and meter installations and remodels up to 100 KVA according to host utility standards. Gas main extensions, and gas svc design to residential customers. Gas meter installation design.
Small Commercial Distribution Design Overhead and Underground lines: Pole replacement, transformer replacements, commercial single phase and 3 phase infrastructure projects and line expansions. Overhead and Underground service and meter installations and remodels up to 300 KVA according to host utility standards. Gas main extensions, and gas svc design to commercial customers. Gas meter installation design to include high pressure and manifold design.
Distribution Planning Design: Design and develop electric distribution projects (overhead and underground systems) Perform load calculations, voltage drop analysis, and system capacity evaluations Review and interpret engineering drawings, maps, and utility standards Coordinate with field crews, engineers, permitting agencies, and clients Support new service connections, upgrades, relocations, and system improvements Ensure compliance with NESC, local codes, and utility standards Utilize GIS, CAD, and utility design software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, Katapult, ArcGIS) Analyze outage data and recommend reliability improvements Assist with storm response planning and system hardening initiatives
New Customer connections Residential design Commercial design Subdivision design Street lighting Upgrade work on existing customer connections
Design overhead and underground distribution electrical and gas facilities. Work on projects including but not limited to: system improvement new and existing gas infrastructure, pole locations, substation design, and service design.
Address engineering challenges on diverse projects of varying sizes and scopes.
Collaborate with electric and gas utilities and private developers.
Maintain a keen focus on precision and technical expertise.
Verify as-built conditions in GIS/AUD so that any identified discrepancies with field date are corrected as part of engineering submissions.
Requirements
Knowledge of NESC, ArcFm GIS , SAP, Work Manager Software (overhead and underground).
Experience working on distribution, transmission, system improvement projects, substation design, service design, and switch replacements.
1-2 years of relevant experience preferred.
Proficiency in one of the following MicroStation, AutoCAD, and GIS is required.
AUD (Automated Utility Design) experience is a bonus.
Familiarity with engineering design software applications, such as PLS CADD, PLS POLE, SPIDACalc, Quick Pole, CDEGS, CYMECAP, CYMEDIST, CYMETCC, SAG10 (as specified by the purchaser).
