Job Description

A Construction Inspector oversees municipal utility, road, and sidewalk projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety standards, while documenting progress, managing contracts, coordinating testing, and engaging with community members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee municipal utility, road, and sidewalk projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and standards.
  • Inspect all aspects of construction projects and document progress through reports and photographs.
  • Maintain accurate records of contract days, work quantities, personnel, equipment, and materials.
  • Review and facilitate change order requests and verify delivered materials against approved submittals.
  • Identify and address potential conflicts proactively through pre-project walks.
  • Advise contractors on traffic control and safety measures to ensure safe work conditions.
  • Coordinate scheduling for soil, asphalt, and concrete testing to ensure quality standards.
  • Collaborate with local residents to minimize construction impact and foster positive community relations.
  • Maintain accurate as-built record drawings for future reference.
  • Communicate project progress and issues to the owner and update project schedules as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management from a four-year college or university
  • 1-4 years of experience in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • Ability to work hours dictated by the Contractor's schedule on short notice
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Comprehensive inspection of municipal utility, road, and sidewalk projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and standards
  • Maintain meticulous records by documenting the Contractor’s work through daily inspection reports and project photographs
  • Keep an accurate log of contract days used and remaining throughout the project, and verify daily quantities of work, providing weekly quantity reports to the Owner
  • Maintain precise records of personnel, equipment, and materials used in force account activities
  • Review change order requests and facilitate a smooth process for necessary modifications
  • Verify that materials delivered to the job site match the approved submittals
  • Conduct pre-project walks to identify potential unforeseen conflicts and address them proactively
  • Advise the Contractor of any insufficient traffic control measures or unsafe work conditions
  • Coordinate scheduling for soils, asphalt, and concrete testing as required
  • Collaborate with local residents to mitigate the impact of construction on their daily lives
  • Maintain accurate as-built record drawings for the project
  • Keep the Owner informed about work progress and field issues as they arise
  • Work closely with the Contractor to provide updated schedules to the Owner as needed
