Job Description
A technical expert responsible for the design, review, and oversight of electrical primary systems in global battery energy storage projects, ensuring compliance, safety, and performance from initial concept through construction and operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design reviews of electrical site drawings, schematics, and reports
- Develop technical specifications for balance of plant (BoP) contractors and assist in tendering
- Formulate condition monitoring strategies for electrical systems
- Collaborate with global engineering teams to ensure consistent practices
- Provide technical input for project feasibility gate reviews
- Supply electrical design details to facilitate grid connection processes
- Participate in Factory and Site Acceptance Tests (FAT, SAT)
- Support construction and commissioning teams by addressing technical queries and evaluating design changes
- Assist operations teams with root cause analysis, maintenance strategies, and risk assessments
- Liaise with AEMO, network providers, and contractors on system specifications and operation
- Continuously improve technical templates, tools, and resources
- Lead workshops on failure mode analysis, root cause investigation, and economic optimization
Requirements
- Experience in the design and operation of high voltage equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, cables, disconnectors, earth switches, and surge arresters, including transformer specification, maintenance, and testing, as well as cable testing and monitoring.
- Proficiency in Primary Substation Design Layout for Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS) and Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substations, including clearance requirements and grounding practices.
- Experience with electrical system modelling analysis such as short-circuit analysis, load flow studies, insulation coordination, arc flash analysis, and electromagnetic field (EMF) studies.
- Implementation of protection schemes and secondary systems interface, with expertise in SCADA and communications within substations.
- Familiarity with electrical design standards including AS, IEC, IEEE, NEC, ANSI, and NESC standards, as well as BESS guidelines, National Electricity Rules (NER), and Generator Performance Standards.
- Ability to conduct risk assessments and design comprehensive earthing and lightning protection systems.
- Experience in busbar design, including cable sizing, layout, stress calculations for high-voltage busbars, and expertise in cable routing and thermal analysis.
- Practical knowledge of onsite construction, installation methods, and commissioning activities related to electrical systems.
- Ability to lead design reviews of site electrical drawings, schematics, diagrams, and reports.
- Experience in developing technical specifications for Balance of Plant (BoP) contractors and assisting in tendering processes.
- Ability to formulate condition monitoring strategies for electrical systems.
- Experience in providing technical input for project feasibility gate reviews to ensure constructability and bankability.
- Ability to supply electrical design details to Grid Connections Managers to facilitate Grid Connection Process (GCP) initiation.
- Experience in supporting construction and commissioning teams by addressing technical queries and evaluating design changes for safety, cost, reliability, and performance.
- Ability to assist operations teams with root cause analysis, maintenance strategies, modification reviews, and risk assessments.
- Experience liaising with AEMO, Network Service Providers, and Contractors on the specification, design, commissioning, and operation of primary systems.
- Proficiency in leading workshops on Failure Mode Analysis, root cause investigation, and economic optimization.
