Job Description

The Chief Wastewater Operator is responsible for managing the daily operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of a wastewater treatment facility, including staff scheduling, reporting, budgeting, and system optimization, while ensuring high-quality water production and fostering client and community relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility in compliance with regulations
  • Schedule and direct staff in plant operation and maintenance activities
  • Prepare and submit regulatory reports such as Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) and Monthly Operation Reports (MORs)
  • Maintain accurate records and utilize work management systems
  • Develop and oversee the capital budget and execute capital projects
  • Ensure proper facility coverage through payroll management and employee evaluations
  • Obtain samples for analysis and ensure facility is properly maintained
  • Train and mentor operators to optimize performance
  • Coordinate communication with staff, clients, contractors, and engineering firms to ensure effective system operation

Requirements

  • Possess a minimum Florida class A wastewater certification.
  • Have experience participating in and managing the daily operations and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Facility in compliance with all Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Be responsible for scheduling staff, providing appropriate direction to staff in the operation and maintenance of the plant, and overseeing facility coverage.
  • Develop and execute the capital budget and oversee capital projects related to the wastewater treatment facility.
  • Ensure the accuracy and timely submission of Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) and Monthly Operation Reports (MORs) to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) in accordance with regulations.
  • Utilize the Hach Wims system to create plant-specific DMRs, MORs, and other required regulatory reports for submission as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance documentation.
  • Perform hands-on work related to wastewater treatment operations and produce all required reports.
  • Coordinate the on-going daily operation of the utility system to ensure effective system operation and optimization.
  • Obtain samples for analysis and ensure proper facility maintenance.
  • Train and mentor operators to perform at their full potential.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with assigned staff, client representatives, contractors, and engineering firms.
  • Ensure proper facility coverage and perform employee evaluations.
  • Oversee payroll and ensure the facility is properly maintained.
  • Maintain an open and effective relationship with customers and the community.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.
