Job Description

The Power Electronics Engineer in Energy Storage at Redwood Materials is responsible for designing, prototyping, and launching high-power, high-voltage power converters for sustainable energy products, focusing on efficiency, manufacturability, and technological innovation in a fast-paced startup environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and launch high-power, high-voltage power converters for mass production.
  • Create accurate control and thermal models to inform circuit and mechanical development.
  • Perform detailed circuit board layout and component selection for manufacturability and electrical performance.

Requirements

  • Familiar with high voltage up to 1,000 2,000VDC and 480VAC and high power 10 200kW power converters, with the ability to quantitatively compare and select topologies, control algorithms, semiconductors, and magnetics while respecting engineering constraints such as efficiency, cost, reliability, and simplicity.
  • Understanding of both hard- and soft-switched topologies.
  • Ability to create highly accurate time-domain control and thermal models of circuits to inform software and mechanical development.
  • Core specialty in high-power circuitry design with a working understanding of microprocessor selection, electrical insulation, and thermal interface.
  • Willingness to perform critical parts of the powertrain layout yourself, including circuit board layout in high-power conversion.
  • Possession of a BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, with a focus in power electronics.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in electrical engineering, with a strong focus in power conversion or energy storage products, ideally for mass production of 10,000 units per year or higher.
  • Experience in high-voltage up to 2000VDC, and 480VAC design.
  • Familiarity with techniques for efficiency optimization.
  • Basic knowledge of control theory and embedded systems.
  • Strong analytical problem solving skills.
  • Experience in rapid iterations on prototypes based on customer, supplier, and co-worker feedback.
  • Deep understanding of power electronics topologies and fundamentals, including AC/DC and DC/DC conversions.
  • Experience with semiconductor selections, gate drive, and protection circuit design.
  • Ability to mentor test technicians to design tests, interpret test results, and define part maturity criteria.
  • Proficiency with basic EE tools such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Proven track record as an electrical engineer with hands-on design, prototyping, and launch experience in medium-to-high volume production.
  • Ability to select circuit components for manufacturability as well as electrical function.
  • Ability to perform detailed schematic capture in Altium or related CAD software.
  • Ability to supervise and occasionally perform detailed layout of high-power electronics PCBs in Altium or related CAD software.
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions safely and successfully in accordance with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with applicable standards.
  • Ability to work in challenging conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes while protected by PPE.
  • Essential physical capabilities such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing.
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends, nights, or be on-call as part of the job.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional travel as required.
