Job Description
The Underwriter will be responsible for managing the profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of commercial insurance business, reviewing and underwriting complex submissions, negotiating with clients, and collaborating with external partners to support the company's underwriting goals in a fast-paced, remote environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of assigned book of business
- Review, underwrite, price, and negotiate complex new and renewal submissions within authority limits
- Refer and discuss accounts outside authority level with management, demonstrating risk understanding and sound judgment
- Identify and analyze non-standard exposure risks and determine appropriate actions
- Develop and implement portfolio management and planning strategies
- Align underwriting activities with financial goals of the department
- Provide problem-solving and troubleshooting support
- Manage workload effectively to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Deliver prompt and reliable customer service to clients
- Perform skilled negotiations to maintain strong client relations
- Utilize underwriting and management tools to support departmental and organizational goals
- Partner with Territory Manager to build and maintain external partner relationships
Requirements
- Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of assigned book of business.
- Skillfully review, underwrite, price, and negotiate complex new and renewal submissions endorsements within established underwriting authority.
- Refer and discuss an account outside of authority level with management demonstrating a thorough understanding of the risk and sound judgement to support recommendations.
- Identify and analyze non-standard exposure risk, determine actions needed to appropriately address.
- Demonstrate creative thinking and capabilities regarding portfolio management and planning.
- Understand financial goals of underwriting department and carry out underwriting responsibilities accordingly and help others do the same.
- Be a problem-solver and trouble-shooter.
- Maintain awareness of deadlines and ability to manage workload accordingly.
- Capable of multi-tasking and excelling in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills including reliable prompt responses to clients and knowledge of products and services.
- Perform skilled negotiations to demonstrate strong client relations.
- Use and understand various underwriting and management tools as it relates to own desk and overall department and organizational goals.
- Have knowledge of underwriting guidelines and requirements.
- Partner with Territory Manager to foster and maintain relationships with external partners.
- Possess 5 to 7 years of experience in Commercial Lines Underwriting, preferably in multi-line and Public Entity insurance.
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree.
- Have experience in a fast-paced work environment demonstrating the ability to meet deadlines and multi-task.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Be self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
