Job Description
The Substation Foreman is responsible for leading and performing advanced electrical work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical substations, ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency while supervising crew members and coordinating project activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced electrical work in the construction, maintenance, operation, and repair of substations, including wiring, equipment, control systems, and relays.
- Lead and coordinate craft workers, ensuring work is completed safely, correctly, and efficiently.
- Conduct safety planning, toolbox meetings, and enforce safety protocols to promote a zero-injury environment.
- Read and interpret schematic diagrams, construction drawings, and industry standards to execute substation construction tasks.
- Perform all phases of substation construction, including foundation work, structure erection, equipment installation, wiring, and grounding.
- Inspect work and field conditions, identify problems, and implement cost-saving measures while ensuring quality standards are met.
- Train and mentor crew members on safety practices, procedures, and technical tasks.
- Ensure proper operation and maintenance of construction equipment, including daily inspections.
- Communicate project status, safety concerns, and work progress to supervisors and team members.
Requirements
- Must have 5 years of recent electrician experience as a Journeyman or an equivalent combination of education and experience in electrical construction.
- Must possess a valid Journeyman certification or equivalent experience to perform the work of a Journeyman Substation Technician.
- High school diploma, GED, or Line school certificate is required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must have Class A or B CDL or the ability to obtain one.
- OSHA-approved certification is preferred, such as NCCCO or CIC Certification for crane operations.
- Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Must be able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, feel, lift, and grab, reach with hands and arms, push and pull, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
- Must have the endurance to perform duties throughout an 8 or 10-hour workday according to the schedule.
- Must be willing to work outside in various weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, and inclement weather, and be exposed to noise.
- Must be willing to travel up to 95% across various locations in the state and country for extended periods when required.
- Must always wear personnel protective equipment, including hard hats, safety glasses, safety harnesses, ear protection, fire-retardant clothing, and respirators when required.
