Job Description
A Distribution Designer at Atwell is responsible for designing overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities, supporting various infrastructure projects, collaborating with utilities and developers, and ensuring precise engineering solutions for system improvements and new connections.
Key Responsibilities
- Design overhead and underground distribution electrical facilities, including system improvements, pole locations, substation, and service design.
- Perform engineering work on distribution projects such as pole replacement, transformer replacements, infrastructure projects, and line expansions.
- Develop and modify distribution systems for grid modernization, including smart switches, battery storage, and voltage conversions.
- Coordinate with electric utilities and private developers on project requirements and specifications.
- Create detailed designs for new customer connections, subdivision layouts, and street lighting upgrades.
- Verify as-built conditions in GIS AUD, correct discrepancies, and prepare engineering documentation and permit applications.
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of NESC, PENG overhead and underground and client requirements.
- Design experience working on distribution, transmission, system improvement projects, substation design, service design, and or switch replacements.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD is required.
- Familiarity with engineering design software applications, such as PLS CADD, PLS POLE, SPIDACalc, Quick Pole, CDEGS, CYMECAP, CYMEDIST, CYMETCC, SAG10, O-Calc as specified by the purchaser.
- Strong math and engineering skills, including structural analysis, sag analysis, basic algebra, and geometry.
- Knowledge of Rural Utilities Service (RUS) standards.
- Working experience in the field of electric distribution, natural gas distribution, substation, and or communications (e.g., fiber).
- Experience applying problem-solving abilities for large utility clients.
- Ability to perform site visits, walk-downs, and provide design support to field workers.
- Ability to verify as-built conditions in GIS AUD and correct discrepancies with field data as part of engineering submissions.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with Project Managers and Team Leaders on workload status.
- Remote work capability, ideally located in areas including Green Bay, Wausau, Milwaukee, or Madison for client-facing travel.
