Job Description
A Biological Field Technician role involving post-construction wildlife mortality monitoring at wind energy facilities, requiring outdoor fieldwork, data collection, and adherence to safety protocols in various locations across the U.S.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct post-construction mortality monitoring beneath wind turbines
- Identify and collect data on bird and bat carcasses
- Perform bias trials including searcher efficiency and carcass persistence trials
- Work in outdoor conditions, including inclement weather and uneven terrain
- Drive and navigate off-road using a 4WD vehicle, GPS, compass, and other tools
- Adhere to safety protocols and demonstrate good judgment in fieldwork
- Maintain detailed records of fatalities and field observations
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or equivalent.
- Experience with or interest in bats and or birds is preferred.
- Strong bat and bird identification skills are a plus, but not required.
- Ability to use a variety of programs to complete tasks including Microsoft Teams, Excel, and ESRI Field Maps.
- Adhere to all safety protocols as defined by the client.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently, follow standardized protocols, and maintain a positive attitude.
- Effective and professional communication with supervisors, project managers, biologists, technicians, clients, and landowners.
- Must have the ability to walk long distances in variable conditions, e.g., extreme heat, cold, high winds, uneven terrain.
- Work solo in the field under inclement weather in physically challenging and harsh conditions for long days.
- Walk up to 12 miles per day over rough terrain.
- Must be comfortable with typical hazards of an outdoor environment, e.g., hazardous wildlife, biting insects, sharp vegetation.
- Must hold a current driver’s license in good standing.
