Job Description
The Principal Engineer will oversee technical aspects of utility-scale solar and energy storage projects, including design review, project development, construction management, and ensuring compliance with industry standards, to support the development and operation of renewable energy assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical oversight for PV and BESS projects throughout development and construction phases.
- Review and coordinate PV, BESS, and HV designs with civil, structural, and electrical teams and external engineers.
- Manage Engineer of Record (EOR) during the design phase and oversee EPC during construction.
- Review technical RFI responses and ensure design compliance with industry standards and codes.
- Perform due diligence on project documentation, identify and communicate design flaws, and verify development studies through site investigations.
- Conduct detailed analysis of civil, structural, and electrical designs and supporting calculations.
- Develop and provide engineering budget estimates for projects.
- Collaborate with engineering, estimating, and construction teams to develop best practices and design standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, required in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil disciplines
- 10 years of hands-on experience as an engineer working with solar, BESS, or another related industry
- Electrical testing and field commissioning experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills, highly motivated and results oriented, process oriented with strong organizational and communication skills
- Knowledge of engineering and renewable energy systems including solar PV systems with SCADA and monitoring systems, and BESS
- Knowledge of site production design calculations, plan preparation, site collector system calculations, and report writing
- Demonstrated knowledge of AutoCAD design, ETAP or similar software, CYMCAP or similar software, PVsyst or similar software, WinIGS or similar software
- Knowledgeable in physical substation design methods and their application
- Advanced computer skills in MS Office, MS Windows, and project controls
